The shell and tube heat exchanger operates on the principle of conductive and convective heat transfer between two fluids:
One fluid (tube-side) flows through the interior of the tubes, while the other fluid (shell-side) flows over the outside of the tubes within the shell.
The fluids are kept physically separated by the tube walls, preventing mixing while allowing heat to transfer from the hotter fluid to the colder one.
Baffles inside the shell direct the shell-side fluid across the tube bundle in a controlled path, enhancing turbulence and improving heat transfer efficiency.
